Commentary Public land auctions first occurred in Ashgrove in 1856, with the land originally being used for farming. However this eventually gave way to residential housing around 1915 when two of the major farming estates were subsequently subdivided.

The suburb is renowned for its period homes, including the aptly named "Ashgrovian" which was Queensland's interpretation of a bungalow during the interwar years. However Ashgrove is also very handy to the city, shopping centres and public transport, with regular City Council buses running along Waterworks Road.

Families will find that scattered parklands around the area provide plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling. Ashgrove is also close to the restaurant and shopping precinct of Paddington, which makes it popular with couples too. Schools in the area include Ashgrove primary school, Oakleigh primary school, St Michael's Girls College and Marist Boys College.
